On January 20, 2009 Thailand Environment Institute, Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) and National Municipal League of Thailand jointly presented Livable City Award 2007 to 40 municipalities throughout Thailand.
As the award was conferred by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the presentation ceremony was presided over by Mr. Plakorn Suwannarat, the Privy Council. The 40 winning municipalities were judged on the basis of their sustainable management in running and administering the community and the areas under their jurisdictions. The judgement takes into account economic growth, upgraded living standard and good environment and natural resources, which is conceptualized as Livable City.
The goal of Livable City Award is to develop a role model for other municipalities and to foster tie and network among local government organizations in boosting livable city throughout Thailand. It is part of the Institute's focus in urban environment and community development. The first Livable City Award was presented in 2004.
