Projects under Thailand-CEF

1) Incentives for the Preservation and Conservation of World Heritage Sites in Thailand

This project aimed to create incentives to involve community participation in conserving World Heritage sites and cultural heritage sites in Thailand. Two sites were selected. One site was Sukhothai Historic Park that had been listed on the World Cultural Heritage Site since 1991. The other was Wat Arunratchawararam (Temple of Dawn).

Duration: 01/03/2000 - 01/12/2000
Project owner and Sponsor: Office of Environmental Policy and Planning (OEPP)

2) Updating of the Information Base for the Revision of the Master Plan for the Management of Sukhothai Historic Park

This project was an extension of the above-mentioned Incentives project. The limitation of the existing Sukhothai Historic Park's Master Plan, promulgated 23 years ago in 1978 and covering the vast area of 70 sq.kms. (or 43,750 rai), had resulted in the encroachment of the Historic Park and leading to street protests. In order to justly solve this problem as well as to effectively conserve the over 200 historic sites within the Park, it was deemed important that the Master Plan be revised to correctly respond to today's reality. The objective of the project was therefore to update the base map of the Park, reflecting inter alia the existing settlements and land use within the Park's boundary. Further the project was to give recommendations regarding measures that the Department of Fine Arts need to be able to implement the (revised) Master Plan.
