The objective of the project was to encourage business
leaders to discuss and adopt a proactive role towards
the environment and to strengthen the capacity building
for industrial environmental management by TBCSD members.
In order to achieve these objectives, the project sought
to provide the tools and incentives to motivate businesses
to integrate sustainable business and environment into
their organizations according to the ten key principles
for achieving sustainable growth, as listed by the World
Business Council for Sustainable Development;
+++++++1. The Market: Sustainable
Development is best achieved through open and competitive
markets that honor legitimate comparative advantages.
Markets encourage efficiency and innovation, which are
necessary for efficient resource use.
+++++++2. The Right Frame:
This calls for full-cost pricing of goods and services;
Dismantling of tariffs and subsidies; Greater use of
market instruments and reduced command-and-control regulations;
Increased taxation on certain items in an attempt to
discourage waste and pollution development.
+++++++3. Eco-efficiency:
This is achieved by the delivery of competitively priced
goods and services that satisfy human needs and improve
quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological
impacts and resource use intensity, to a level at least
in line with the earths estimated carrying capacity.
+++++++4. Corporate Social
Responsibility: The commitment of business to contribute
to sustainable economic development, working with employees,
their families, the local community and society at large,
to improve their quality of life
+++++++5. Learning to Change:
Movement toward corporate concern for the triple bottom
line financial, social, and environmental performance
requires radical change throughout the corporation.
+++++++6. From Dialogue
to Partnership: Dialogue with Corporate stakeholders,
including but not exclusive to, employees, shareholders,
communities, NGOs, consumers, partners, suppliers, governments,
and society. Effective dialogue allows us to learn to
decrease uncertainty, misunderstanding, risk, and liability;
It aslo results in increased public acceptance of corporate
activity, and increases the predictability of regulations.
Not only do such partnerships combine skills, they also
transfer technology which assists small enterprises
better themselves. Therefore, progress towards sustainable
development requires many more cooperative stakeholders
in every sector.
+++++++7. Consumer Choice:
Informed freedom of choice requires that consumers
have access to the information and price signals to
make educated and appropriate decisions. Informed, responsible,
and knowledgeable consumer choice, can help achieve
sustainability through the market via a triple-win:
By improving quality of life for consumers; By reducing
environmental and social impacts; And by increasing
the market share of sustainability minded companies.
+++++++8. Innovation: The
encouragement of innovation, through the provision of
the resources required to support innovative practices,
can enable our global economy to depend more on the
progress of technology than on the exploitation of nature.
Innovation can enable companies to create wealth in
ways that reflect the changing concerns and values of
our world.
+++++++9. Reflecting the
Worth of the Earth: The market effectively monitors
economic, environment and social issues through pricing
mechanisms of goods and services and it will enhance
consumption in the right way.
+++++++10. Making Markets
Works for All: Developed countries should allow developing
countries full access to international markets and have
competitive markets. In addition, developed countries
should help developing countries on debt management
and transfer cleaner technology in order to encourage
development with an Eco-efficiency concept. This will
help economic growth and the implementation of an action
plan on sustainable development.
The TBCSD has undertaken activities to find good practices
and information on appropriate technology to reduce
environmental impacts and ineffective resource use.
An Example of such undertaking is a seminar on Environmental
Policy for TBCSD members. This was held in order to
assist with the development of environmental policy
in business. Other seminars providing information and
tools in the areas of waste minimization, energy conservation,
Demand-Side management concepts, Life Cycle Analysis,
Energy and Environmental Policy, both in the public
and private sector, were also organized and well supported.
