1) A Participatory
Approach to Environmental Management and Clean-up in Samut Prakan
The project aimed to enhance
environmental management focusing on industrial pollution management
by using Samut Prakan as a model through a multi-stakeholder participatory
approach. The project built up environmental awareness of the people
living in the industrial area and facilitated the transfer of cleaner
technology and pollution abatement technology know-how to Thai industry.
The project had two components: 1) The Participatory Environmental
Management Committee drawn from all major stakeholders in the province,
and 2) Cleaner Production Technology Demonstration Projects nominated
by the Committee and awarded by the European Union for the application
of European clean technology.

2) Sustainable
Cities
The Thailand Environment Institute
(TEI) undertook a policy study for the Office of Environmental Policy
and Planning (OEPP) on the "sustainable city" issue under the framework
of Agenda 21 (Chapter 7). The implementation of the "sustainable
city" concept encompassed many aspects, including land-use, energy,
transportation, waste management and people's participation. TEI
assisted the OEPP in preparing a project document for implementing
sustainable cities in Thailand. Phuket and Nakhon Sri Thammarat
were selected as implementation sites.

importance of the role of human settlements in pursuing sustainable
development and commissioned TEI to undertake this study which had
three main objectives as follows:
To review the situation of
sustainable human settlements in Thailand.
To review the work that had
been undertaken pertaining to the human settlements issues as outlined
in Agenda 21.
To identify and prioritize
