The Thai Green Label Scheme was initiated by the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD) in October 1993. It was formally launched in August 1994 by Thailand Environment Institute (TEI), Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) and other relevant agencies to act out concretely. Therefore, it is considered an environmental label of Thailand arising from cooperation between government agencies and various central organizations. The Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Thai Environment Institute act as secretaries.
Green label is established as an independent agency providing information about environmentally friendly products and services that is neutral, reliable, as well as taking care of environmental quality control by promoting awareness and preventing pollution that may occur throughout the life cycle in a systematic and transparent manner. Because green products that are available in the market today only promoted by independent manufacturers and distributors.
The main purpose of the Green label comes from the concept and the need for Thailand sustainable development by adhering to the principles of national economic development in parallel with environmental protection as follows:

Green Label is an environmental label type 1 in accordance with ISO 14024, started to certify environmentally friendly products since 1994. It has been developed in cooperation with other countries' environmental labeling agencies continually. Green Label has joined GENICES accredited member of Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN). This is the organization for environmental labeling type 1 consists of members from more than 50 countries around the world which have a common objective in carrying out cooperation activities, transferring knowledge and developing criteria for environmentally friendly products that are Common Core Criterial (CCC). In order to create cooperation among GEN members, members may sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) together for joining organizational operations and accepting laboratory standards and the test results of the same product.
1) Accept the application for other environmental label certification and 2) Conduct an on-site assessment of an establishment of countries with cooperation. At present, Green Label has signed a MOU with the environmental label certification agencies type I (GEN member) such as Taiwan, South Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, P.R. China, Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, German and India.
Green Label has developed specification criteria for use as reference criteria for product certification in order to have environmentally friendly products and services on the market which some products are imported or exported to different countries. Therefore, the Green Label has developed criteria for environmentally friendly products that can be shared between countries.
