The Thai Green Label Scheme was initiated by the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD), chaired by Mr. Anand Panyarachun in October 1993 as a TBCSD council project. It was formally launched in August 1994 by he Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) in association with the Ministry of Industry.

The Green Label is an environmental certification awarded to specific products that are shown to have minimum detrimental impact on the environment in comparison with other products serving the same function.

The Thai Green Label Scheme applies to products and services, not including foods, drinks, and pharmaceuticals. Products or services which meet the Thai Green Label criteria can carry the Thai Green Label. Participation in the scheme is voluntary.

The symbol signifies environmental conservation. The flora (the leaves) and fauna (the bird) depicted are the living wonders of the world. In the myriad of links with our earth, our hopes for future generations (the smiling face) grows from life respecting nature.



โครงการฉลากเขียวของประเทศไทย ริเริ่มขึ้นโดยคณะกรรมการนักธุรกิจเพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อมไทย (Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development, TBCSD) เมื่อเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2536 และได้รับความเห็นชอบและความร่วมมือจากกระทรวงอุตสาหกรรรม กระทรวง วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี และสิ่งแวดล้อม สำนักงานมาตรฐานผลิตภัณฑ์อุตสาหกรรม และหน่วยงานอื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ให้ปฏิบัติออกมาเป็นรูปธรรม จึงนับว่าเป็นโครงการที่เกิดจากการร่วมมือระหว่างส่วนราชการ และองค์กรกลางต่าง ๆ โดยมีสำนักงานมาตรฐานผลิตภัณฑ์อุตสาหกรรมและสถาบันสิ่งแวดล้อมไทยทำหน้าที่เป็นเลขานุการ

ฉลากเขียว (green label หรือ eco-label) คือ ฉลากที่มอบให้แก่ผลิตภัณฑ์ที่มีผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมน้อยกว่า เมื่อนำมาเปรียบเทียบกับผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ทำหน้าที่อย่างเดียวกัน โดยที่ คุณภาพยังอยู่ในระดับมาตรฐานที่กำหนด ผลิตภัณฑ์เหล่านี้ หมายถึง สินค้าและบริการหลายประเภท ยกเว้นยา เครื่องดื่มและอาหาร เนื่องจากทั้งสามประเภทที่กล่าวจะเกี่ยวข้องกับสุขภาพความปลอดภัยในการบริโภคมากกว่าด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม การติดฉลากเขียวจะสร้างความสับสนให้แก่ผู้บริโภคได้

เครื่องหมายฉลากเขียว เป็นเครื่องหมายสื่อถึงความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันของมนุษย์ (รูปหน้าเด็กกำลังยิ้ม) สัตว์ (รูปนก) สิ่งแวดล้อม(ต้นไม้) และโลก การช่วยกันอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมในวันนี้เท่ากับช่วยให้ลูกหลานของเรสอาศัยอยู่ในโลกได้อย่างมีความสุขตลอดไป
