As greenhouse gas emissions are the main cause of the global warming, affected countries across the world have increasingly paid attention to the problem with attempts to ease the escalating climate change problem. One of practical and useful measures for battling the global warming is the collective cooperation from industrial and agricultural sectors, as producers of products; the service sector, as drivers or operators of business activities; and the general public, as consumers, in significantly reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. The greenhouse gas emissions reduction activities of consumers can be linked with the product manufacturers and service providers by purchasing environmental-friendly and climate friendly products and services. To support consumers in making decisions for purchasing climate friendly, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD) and Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) have jointly launched the Carbon Reduction Label to encourage product manufacturers and service providers to improve the efficiency of production processes. The Carbon Reduction Label shows the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions emitted from the production process of each product and service. This information will be communicated to consumers, so that consumers can use this information as a purchasing criterion and be part of the worldwide attempts to ease the global warming problem.

WHAT IS CARBON REDUCTION LABEL?:

Carbon Reduction Label is a label indicating the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions per unit of product/service as a simple reference for consumers to decide on what items of products or services they should purchase.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To promote the provision of verified information on reduced greenhouse gas emissions, as a label on products and services sold on the market, to support consumers’ participation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the production process of each product and service.
  2. To use the market mechanism in raising awareness of producers and consumers on greenhouse emissions, leading to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Thailand.
  3. To be part of the world community’s attempts in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions.

ADVANTAGES:

  1. Products or services certified and registered the Carbon Reduction Label become a new criterion for consumers and foreign visitors to decide on what products and services they should purchase.
  2. The Carbon Reduction Label reflects the awareness of product manufacturers and service providers on environmental problems by providing climate friendly products and services; as well as, portrays social responsibility and good corporate image for manufacturers and providers.
  3. The Carbon Reduction Label is a high potential part of the market mechanism to move product manufacturers and service providers towards low-carbon economy.
  4. Entrepreneurs whose products or services are certified with the Carbon Reduction Label directly benefit from the cost reduction in production processes (originated from the reductions of fossil fuel and power consumptions in production processes, and waste generation). This movement will further create changes in the supply chain towards climate friendly practices, especially for the change of raw material acquisition.
